Lan Ying Antique-Style Landscape Painting Embroidery: A Perfect Fusion of Craftsmanship and Art

This work, embroidered by Yangzhou Lihao Yiran Embroidery Research Institute and the National-Level Master Zhu Juncheng Skilled Master Studio, uses the antique Song and Yuan style landscape painting by Ming dynasty painter Lan Ying as its draft, demonstrating extraordinary artistic charm.

From the picture of the embroidery, it accurately restores the landscape artistic conception of Lan Ying’s painting. The landscapes in the picture are clearly layered; the distant mountains, through the ingenious interweaving of silk threads during embroidery, present a hazy beauty, as if shrouded in a faint mist—precisely the ethereal artistic conception pursued by Song and Yuan landscape painting. The clever use of embroidery thread thickness is a major highlight of this work: the thickest 1/4 thread is used to outline the contours of mountain forms and main branches, giving the picture a sense of stability; while the finest 1/16 thread is used to depict details such as leaves and figures, making the picture more exquisite and delicate.

The Yiran Embroidery Method is well demonstrated in this embroidery work, breaking free from the rigid uniformity of traditional embroidery stitches. Through the crisscrossing of silk threads, the embroidery possesses a strong three-dimensional sense and layering. When embroidering trees, this stitching method perfectly presents the vigor and natural growth posture of the trees; each tree seems to have vitality, the texture of branches is clearly visible, and the leaves seem to sway gently in the breeze.

The meticulous 35-day embroidery process reflects the creators’ dedication and focus on art. Under the artistic guidance and supervision of Master Zhu Juncheng, every stitch is imbued with the embroiderers’ hard work. Although the figures in the embroidery are relatively small, through the layer-by-layer stacking of silk threads, their postures and expressions are vivid, as if one can feel the leisurely and contented state of mind of the figures in the painting.

Although the 30×40 cm embroidery core size is not large, within a limited space it can create such a grand and poetic landscape world, which is truly rare. This embroidery work is not only a wonderful interpretation of Lan Ying’s painting, but also a magnificent blossoming of artistic embroidery; it integrates classical aesthetics with modern craftsmanship and possesses extremely high artistic value and cultural significance.
