Creation Notes

At the October 2014 Jiangsu Arts and Crafts Masterpiece Grand Prix Yibo Cup, the work “Deer in the Forest,” embroidered by Yangzhou Lihao Yiran Embroidery Research Institute, won the Bronze Award. This work was jointly completed by Zhu Buhua and Wang Yuling of the institute, with Master Zhu Juncheng leading the artistic guidance.

From the image, this “Deer in the Forest” fully demonstrates the unique charm of Yiran embroidery in its craftsmanship. First, the forest scene in the picture is vivid. The depiction of the trees is superb; the texture of the trunks is realistically restored through the ingenious interweaving of silk threads. The embroiderers used embroidery threads of different colors and lengths to perfectly present the folds and weathered feel of the trunks, as if one could touch the rough texture of the bark. The branches stretch out in all directions, and the direction of the embroidery threads precisely depicts the forms of the branches; each branch appears natural and full of tension.

The leaves are even more colorful and richly layered. The stitching method of Yiran Embroidery makes the color transitions of the leaves natural and smooth, from dark green to light yellow and then to orange-red; silk threads of various colors interweave with one another, like real leaves shining with different lusters under the sun. Sunlight filters through the gaps in the leaves onto the ground, and the light and shadow effects are perfectly expressed through the density variation of the embroidery threads, creating a quiet and beautiful forest atmosphere.

Next, look at the deer, which is the crowning touch of the entire work. The deer’s posture is elegant, and the texture of its fur is fully displayed through the staggered lengths of silk threads and color matching. The deer’s eyes are bright and spirited, as if full of vitality and liveliness, thanks to the embroiderer’s

careful selection of silk thread colors and delicate handling of stitches. The deer’s posture is natural, as if leisurely strolling in the forest, harmoniously blending with the surrounding environment.

Master Zhu Juncheng’s artistic guidance elevated this work to a higher artistic level. Through Yiran embroidery, this innovative embroidery art, the natural beauty of the forest and deer is beautifully presented before people’s eyes, fully demonstrating the infinite charm of Yiran embroidery.
