Blue-and-Green Landscape Embroidery: A Visual Feast of Exquisite Craftsmanship

This blue-and-green landscape embroidery work, embroidered by Yangzhou Lihao Yiran Embroidery Research Institute and the National-Level Master Zhu Juncheng Studio, is breathtaking in its exquisite craftsmanship. The work was completed in November 2024, taking 67 days.

In terms of stitching techniques, the work adopts Zhu Juncheng’s original Yiran Embroidery Method, which is fully demonstrated here. The embroidery thread thickness flexibly varies between 1/4 thread and 1/16 thread; thick threads are used to outline the contours of mountain forms and main branches, giving the picture a grand and majestic three-dimensional sense. For example, the outlines of the mountain peaks in the picture, embroidered with thick threads, appear firm and imposing. Fine threads are used to depict details; leaves and the textures of rocks are all rendered through the finest embroidery of up to 1/16 thread. Each leaf seems to sway gently in the breeze, and the postures and movements of the figures are vivid, as if one can feel their leisurely contentment among the streams and mountains.

In color handling, the characteristics of blue-and-green landscape are fully embodied. The embroiderers carefully selected embroidery threads and, through the interweaving and layering of silk threads, achieved natural transitions and a sense of layering in the blue-green colors. From the faint blue-green of distant mountains to the rich blue-green of nearby trees, the color gradation is natural and smooth, without any abruptness, perfectly restoring the artistic conception of blue-and-green landscape.

Under the artistic guidance and supervision of Master Zhu Juncheng, every stitch and every thread is imbued with the creator’s respect and love for traditional art. Every detail has been repeatedly considered and embroidered; whether it is the swirling clouds and mist among the mountains or the density and distribution of trees, all are handled just right.

Overall, this embroidery work creates a grand landscape artistic conception within a limited space, bringing the charm of the Yiran Embroidery Method to a relatively high level, and demonstrating the superb embroidery skills and profound artistic foundation of Zhu Juncheng’s studio.
