Creation Notes

At the October 2014 Jiangsu Arts and Crafts Masterpiece Grand Prix Yibo Cup competition, the Yiran embroidery work “Little Girl Holding Cherries,” jointly created by Ma Kouxiong and Zhu Zhidan of Yangzhou Lihao Yiran Embroidery Research Institute, won the Bronze Award, while the artistic guidance led by Master Zhu Juncheng injected soul into this work.

From the effect presented in the image, this work demonstrates exquisite craftsmanship throughout. Looking first at the little girl’s face, the delicate skin texture seems truly touchable. Through the interweaving of embroidery threads of varying lengths and layers, the light and shadow changes on the face are precisely expressed; whether it is the smoothness of the forehead, the roundness of the cheeks, or the smallness of the chin, all are depicted with penetrating accuracy. The little girl’s eyes are like

deep lake water, bright and spirited, with each eyelash distinctly visible, as if gently trembling. This is thanks to the embroiderer’s ingenious use of silk threads: extremely fine embroidery threads outline the contours of the eyes and the forms of the eyelashes, and then different shades of color are blended to render the spirit and depth of the pupils.

Next, look at the cherries in the little girl’s hand: each one is plump and round, with a color so vivid it seems about to drip. The stitching method of Yiran Embroidery makes the luster and three-dimensionality of the cherries leap off the embroidery; from the bright parts to the dark parts of the cherries, the color transition is natural and smooth, as if sunlight had just fallen on them, reflecting an alluring radiance. The thinness and freshness of the cherry stems are also perfectly expressed, as if they would break with a gentle bend.

The little girl’s clothing is likewise a splendid display of craftsmanship. The texture of the clothes is delicate and rich; whether it is the folds at the collar, the lace at the cuffs, or the patterns on the main body of the clothes, all present a unique texture through the careful arrangement of embroidery threads. The density variation of the stitches skillfully creates the light and shadow effects of the clothing, making it seem to move with the wind, full of vitality.

Under the careful guidance of Master Zhu Juncheng, Ma Kouxiong and Zhu Zhidan, with their profound understanding and skilled mastery of Yiran embroidery craftsmanship, vividly embroidered the image of “Little Girl Holding Cherries.” This award-winning work is not only high praise for the creators’ skills, but also a powerful testimony to Su embroidery craftsmanship advancing on the path of inheritance and innovation, showing the world the infinite potential and endless charm of Yiran embroidery.
